Five promises for the worst day at work.

The Fair Layoff Pledge is a public commitment from employers to lay people off with honesty, clear information and real help finding what comes next.

Every person we lay off leaves with this sheet. Build one.

Most layoffs go wrong in the same few ways.

Each of these is a planning problem, and the five promises plan for each one.

Too many people learn they've lost their job from a locked account, a mass video call or a rumor. Then they wait days for the details that decide their next month.

In their words: people who were laid off

  • Having an hour to say goodbye, you feel like a number.

  • It was really a cold, gross letter with a link to the off-boarding.

    A laid-off Google employee. Fortune, January 2023

  • I went to go sign into the VPN, and the VPN was like, ‘this user doesn't exist anymore.’

The five promises

What every employer that signs commits to, for every person it lays off.

A fair last day, start to finish

  1. Before

Call the state's Rapid Response team. Fill in a last-day sheet for each person. Get the severance terms ready to hand over.

    A soft landing
  2. The conversation

A manager tells people one-on-one or in a small group, in plain words: the decision, the last day and the reason. It takes about 15 minutes.

    A person tells you, plainly
  3. The same day

The sheet and any severance terms go home with them. A written follow-up email arrives that day, and there's time to save files and say goodbye.

Everything in writing, on the day
  4. The weeks after

Belongings ship home. The laptop stays with them where it can. One named person answers questions for 90 days.

    Your things and your records

For employers

Signing costs nothing. You get the tools to keep the promises.

  • A meeting script and a follow-up email you can adapt
  • A listing in the public directory, with the help you offer
  • A clear standard to hold your own managers to

For workers

Facing a layoff? These are fair things to ask for, whether or not your employer has signed.

  • Who will tell me, and when?
  • What are my final pay date and health coverage end date, in writing?
  • Can I keep my laptop, and how do I get my things?
  • Will you contest my unemployment claim?

Ask your employer to sign

Most employers have never been asked. Send HR a short note, or share the pledge.

Would we sign the Fair Layoff Pledge?

Hi,

I came across the Fair Layoff Pledge: five promises employers make about how they lay people off. A person tells you, plainly. Everything in writing on the day. Help finding what comes next. Your things and records looked after. Pay through the holidays.

It's free to sign, and it comes with a sheet builder and a meeting script. Could we take a look?

Thanks.
